Huge increase in cost of Maldives holidays causes slump

Tour operators are reporting a drop in bookings for Maldives holidays, with some saying that bookings have slumped by 35%. The slump has been caused by an increase in land costs, poor exchange rates and an increase in airfares.

It’s not just The Maldives that is suffering. Other long haul destinations in the Caribbean like Barbados and Antigua are declining as holiday destinations too.

In contrast, holidays to Mauritius have seen an increase in demand. Mauritius has lots of  very good quality hotels, great beaches and prices are looking good compared to The Maldives. The Dominican Republic is also benefiting as prices are cheaper than other Caribbean islands and the island has lots of very good 5 star hotels.

Here is an example of how Maldives holidays prices have increased. This week we were asked to quote for Kuramathi Island in The Maldives. It’s a great place for a honeymoon. Our customer had booked the same holiday with us last year and he had paid £7,000 for 12 nights in a Jacuzzi Water Villa on Select All Inclusive. This year, the same holiday cost £9,230, a massive increase of nearly 32%.

I can vouch for the quality of the hotels on Mauritius as I have been to several and the food is fantastic. Mauritius has great beaches and I think it must be one of the most luxurious holiday destinations that I have visited.

The economy of The Maldives relies heavily on tourism and if the fall in visitors continues it will have a significant effect on the economy.

The Maldives have been a popular holiday destination for honeymooners for many years and some of the most expensive hotels in the world are located here. A holiday to The Maldives could be about to become even more exclusive!

Become a castaway on The Maldives

Why not be a Robinson Crusoe and swap the bustle of English life for the drifting paradise of the Maldives

More and more people are grabbing their Man Fridays and heading out to this beautiful hideaway in the Indian Ocean, with A-list castaways such as Jodie Kidd, Sienna Miller and Vivienne Westwood leading the way.

The cluster of coral islands forms an archipelago of 26 major atolls, surrounded by crystal blue waters and fanned by warm tropical breezes.

The more well-known resorts such as Reethi Rah, Huvafen Fushi and Soneva Gila boast luxurious accommodation, with wooden villas housing spas and access to private beaches and lagoons.

Unlike Mr Crusoe you won’t need to worry about wearing your threads out – shopping is a favourite local pastime and the streets of capital island Male are thronged with vendors and crowds well into the night.

Starvation also won’t be an issue with the delicious morsels of seafood served up in the capital’s buzzing restaurants.

Recent government statistics show that more UK residents than ever are escaping to exotic locations, with a 19 per cent increase in visits to unusual destinations last month, so there couldn’t be a better time to join the adventurous crowds.

All you’ll have to worry about is avoiding the rescue party!

Atoll Explorer – Customer Review

It’s really nice when customers give us feedback about their holiday experiences. A customer has just returned from a Maldives cruise on the Atoll Explorer and she has sent these comments and a wonderful photograph that shows just how relaxing and beautiful the Atoll Explorer is.

“I got back from the Atoll Explorer on Monday and just wanted to thank you for all your help – it was an amazing experience, the most beautiful place; extraordinary service; lovely fellow passengers; an inordinately healthy diet of fish, fruit and vegetables slightly offset by any number of Pina Coladas! I think the attached might give you an idea of how I felt the whole time.

I will definitely book with you next year – torn between just going straight back or finding a different amazing place”.

I’m celebrating my wedding anniversary – Today’s customer enquiry

We get a lot of customers calling us who are looking to go to The Maldives to celebrate an important wedding anniversary. The most often asked question we get is which island in The Maldives do we recommend for an anniversay celebration. Today’s customer said that they had been on budget holidays in the UK for the last few years but they wanted to spend their money on an exotic holiday abroad. After several years of poor weather whilst they were on holiday they wanted a romantic holiday to remember in The Maldives.

Our customer also said that she wanted an All Inclusive resort as they had heard that drinks on The Maldives are expensive.

There are many good islands in The Maldives that would satisfy most discerning clients. It’s an 11 hour flight from London and you can fly direct with BA from London Gatwick and also from London Heathrow with Sri Lankan Airlines.

The island that we recommended was –

Kuramathi Island – This island was refurbished two years ago and since then it has probably become one of our best selling holidays. It is good value for money and they offer standard All Inclusive and an A la Carte All Inclusive option which in our opinion is well worth upgrading to. The water villas at Kuramathi are also of a very high standard. The sunbathing terrace’s are private and you get your own ladder into the crystal clear warm sea.

Our client said she was happy with our suggestion of Kuramathi. We had also discussed Coco Palm Dhuni Kholi and Meeru Island and she said she would call us back. Here’s hoping we have a happy customer !

Kuramathi A la Carte All Inclusive – Is it Worth It ?

If you are looking for a holiday to The Maldives then you might want to consider a holiday to Kuramathi Island Resort.

Kuramathi offers two types of All Inclusive accommodation. The “standard” All Inclusive and the “A la Carte All Inclusive”.

What’s the difference between the two All Inclusive types ?  This article will explain the difference to you.

Standard All Inclusive at Kuramathi includes the following:

Main Meals: Your Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner buffets in either Haruge, Malaafaiy or Farivalhu restaurant. A restaurant is allocated to you based on your villa category.

A la Carte All Inclusive includes:

You get to choose which restaurant you eat in every day, although, reservations are required. The choice of restaurants is:

Haruge, Malaafaiy and Farivalhu – Buffet dining
Siam Garden – Thai Cuisine
Tandoor Mahal – Indian Cuisine
The Reef – seafood restaurant  (cosy and romantic)
Island Barbeque – Grill on the beach
Palm Pizzeria & Gelateria – Mediterranean

Our opinion

In our opinion and that of our clients it is well worth upgrading to A la Carte all inclusive. We think that the food and service is of a better quality and also the whole experience becomes more special. If you can afford it go for it !

 Drinks at Kuramathi

A la carte all inclusive includes the same drinks as standard all inclusive apart from that you get wine by the bottle. Both all inclusives include the following:

Champagne, Bottled Wine and Premium Brands are not included. Any items not included are indicated in the menus.

-Soft Drinks such as Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Fanta, Soda Water
– Canned Juices such as orange juice, pineapple juice, apple juice
– Spirits/Liquors
– Cocktails – both alcoholic and non-alcoholic
– Wines – house wines by the glass
– Beer – Carlsberg draft beer
– Water – house mineral water

Minibar in the Villa: Non-alcoholic beverages such as soft drinks and house mineral water is included.

All you have to do now is decide whether you think the extra cost for a la carte all inclusive is worth it. It does, of course depend on your budget but if you are going to go to this beautiful island then we think you should upgrade if you possibly can as the whole experience will be much more special!

The Best Water Villa in The Maldives

We have all seen the holiday brochures with the amazing holiday destinations that we think we can only dream about. Those water villas in The Maldives, like the one in the picture above, look incredible and indeed they are. The cost of staying in a water villa in The Maldives can be very expensive especially on some of the exclusive island resorts in The Maldives but you might be surprised to learn that there are some much cheaper Maldives islands that offer a similar experience at a fraction of the price.

We have done our research, looked at the best water villa deals and come up with a few of the cheapest deals for water villas and water bungalows in The Maldives. They all might not have bathtubs that look out into the Indian Ocean but they will still provide you with a fantastic exotic Maldives resort experience that you will never forget. Some resorts will also have a Spa and you don’t have to be on a Honeymoon to still get the most of this type of holiday!

Maldives Atoll Explorer Cruise for 2 weeks

If you are looking for a cruise with a difference then you might want to consider a cruise around the stunning islands of The Maldives in the Indian Ocean. The cruise ship is called The Atoll Explorer and it is one of our best selling cruises. Forget the stiff upper lip of some cruise ships because this is a totally different experience. With only about 30 cabins the Atoll Explorer is relaxed and informal but the cruise will enable you to see some of the most stunning tropical islands that you will ever see. The Atoll Explorer is also perfect if you like diving as the cruise ship has excellent diving facilities on board.

Most of our customers take the cruise for 7 nights but we also get an increasing number of people who book 14 nights on the cruise. The Atoll Explorer operates 2 different cruise routes which take in a different selection of islands in The Maldives so it is possible to book cruise 1 for 7 nights and then take cruise 2 for 7 nights. This back to back cruise means you will probably have one of the most relaxing holidays you will have ever had and at the same time you will see more of the tropical paradise of The Maldives.

If you don’t want a 2 week cruise then you could also spend a week cruising The Maldives on the Atoll Explorer and then spend 7 nights on an island in The Maldives. The Atoll Explorer offer All Inclusive board basis and it has 3 cabin grades.

Cabin grade C is the cheapest cabin and they all have twin beds and a porthole.

Cabin grade B is more expensive and these cabins have double beds and a small balcony.

Cabin grade A is slightly larger, has a double bed and a larger balcony. These cabins are at the rear of the boat. These cabins are available at a supplement.

If you decide that you want to spend a week on the Atoll Explorer and a week on an island then the choice of islands is virtually unlimited and depends on your budget.

Holiday to The Maldives

Vilu Reef in The Maldives becomes”All Inclusive”

Holidays to The Maldives

The recession is having an impact on the number of visitors to The Maldives. 2009 saw a drop in visitors to The Maldives but many hotels are fighting back by adopting the All Inclusive concept and offering better value for money. If you are looking for a bargain holiday to The Maldives then now is the time to book as there are plenty of special offers around to take advantage of.

Vilu Reef Resort and Spa

One island in The Maldives that has become an All Inclusive resort is Vilu Reef and Spa  on South Nilandhe Atoll. Vilu Reef is a 4 star resort but if you are looking for ultra luxury then you should look at another island but Vilu Reef does offer very good value for money. The spa is not up to the standard of what you would expect at a top class resort on The Maldives, although, there are plans to improve it.

Also, the gym is very basic and the water villas don’t have some of the features that you would expect elsewhere like a glass floor. What Vilu Reef does give you though is low prices and, of course, you still get what all the islands have in The Maldives, which is beautiful white sand beaches with palm trees and clear water. Another advantage about Vilu Reef is that it is a small island with only 122 villas and rooms of which 40 are water villas most of which have a jacuzzi. The island is friendly and well managed.

Rooms at Vilu Reef

As far as the rooms are concerned the basic rooms are the Deluxe Garden Villa rooms but they are comfortable and excellent value for money. If you have money to spend and you are on honeymoon then you might want to consider the Honeymoon Water Villas where you get the service of your own private butler.

Seaplane Transfer

Vilu Reef itself is quite a distance from Male, the capital, and you will need a seaplane transfer to get there, but that adds to the exitement.
