How to Avoid being Robbed on Holiday

Avoid being pickpocketed.

Here are our top tips for avoiding being robbed whilst on holiday

Being pick-pocketed whilst on holiday or our room being broken into whilst you are sunbathing on the beach is not a good holiday experience. We all want our holidays to be stress free but sometimes these things happen. However, by taking a few simple common sense precautions we can limit our chances of having our cherished holiday ruined.

Photocopy your credit cards and ID

Make photocopies of your credit and debit cards and Passport and store them in a safe place. That way, they’ll be easier to replace should you ever get pick-pocketed or robbed.

Secure your valuables

Keep your valuables out of easy reach—not in your backpack or back pocket. Put your wallet in your front pocket (no matter how nerdy it looks). If you’re carrying a purse, put it in the inside zippered pocket, and keep the purse closed and firmly under your arm.If you’re carrying a wallet in your pocket, wrap two rubber bands around it. The friction will make it much harder for a pickpocket to lift the wallet out of your trousers.

Keep mobile phones safe

Keep your mobile phone in a safe place where it can’t be slipped out.

Never look like you are lost

Always look like you know where you’re going. Pickpockets zero in on people engrossed in maps and travel books—because they’re distracted, and because it marks them as tourists, who often have plenty of cash on them.

Watch for set ups

Watch out for set ups. Pickpockets often employ elaborate scams, like working in groups or pairs to distract you, “accidentally” jostling you on a bus or train, or even pretending to spill something on you so they can clean it off.

Be suspicious of strangers

The person you’d least suspect can be a pickpocket, including that adorable kid who seems to just want to be your friend.

Beware during the day

Be especially vigilant during the day — most pickpockets strike while the sun is out.

Wear a money belt

The best defence against pickpockets is to wear a money belt. This slim accessory slips under your clothes—a thief would have to work pretty hard to steal it undetected there.

Walk around with confidence.

Pickpockets are drawn to people who look lost or confused. If you are lost, avoid standing on the street pondering your map. Step inside a shop and ask for help.

Use a room safe

Most good hotel rooms have a room safe so use it if you have brought valuables on holiday with you.  Also, use the room safe to put your travel documents in and passports.

Don’t leave valuables on display

Keep your hotel room tidy and put valuables in a safe or take them with you. Leaving valuables on display makes them tempting for maids and so on.

Lock all doors

Keep your hotel room door locked or your apartment or villa secure, even when you are there.
