Venice Sinks Under The Weight Of Vending Machines & Handbags

Venice, Italy Grand CanalVenice is one of our most popular city break destinations. Personally as well, I love the place. If you haven’t been to Venice yet, then you should make the effort to go because it is one of the most unusual cities in the world. It is very easy to get lost in Venice as the city is a labyrinth of narrow streets and back alleys, all built on a network of canals. There are no cars in the city centre. All deliveries are made by gondola or other boats.

There has been much publicity over the years about Venice slowly sinking into the sea. But now a new subject is worrying the locals. The local council have just done a deal with the drinks company Coco-Cola. In return for funds the council have allowed Coco-Cola to install vending machines throughout the city. This has anoyed the locals as there is actually a ban in place which forbids eating and drinking in St Mark’s Square unless you are seated at one of the many expensive cafes there. They also feel that the new vending machines will be a blot on the landscape and we have got to agree with them. Venice has many stunning historic buildings dating back centuries.

The prospect of  Coco-Cola vending machines appearing in those cherished tourist photographs is not a good thought !Don’t let this put you off visiting Venice though. The city won’t be sinking under the weight of vending machines just yet, although maybe combined with the weight of all those fake designer handbags that are for sale on the streets may just be the final straw !
