El Sombrero Corralejo – Restaurant Review

A Global holidays staff member is just back from a holiday to Fuerteventura and here he tells our Travel Blog about his opinion on the best restaurant in Corralejo.

If you are planning a holiday to Corralejo on the island of Fuerteventura then I have to tell you about my favourite restaurant in Corralejo. It might not be the best because I haven’t tried them all but it is my favourite restaurant. I have been on holiday to Fuerteventura many times and I have visited the El Sombrero restaurant on the harbour front in Corralejo old town so many times that I have forgotten how many times I have been. In fact I have just returned home after 2 weeks on Fuerteventura and I visited El Sombrero 4 times in 2 weeks.

It’s because I love the location right on the harbour side that I really like this place, but also it sells my favourite meal! It’s called the Pirate Borneo and basically it is chunks of fillet steak on a rack which is then set alight with burning brandy. It’s fairly basic stuff. It’s not gourmet cooking at its best. It’s not Michelin star but I love it!

The El Sombrero is a nice looking restaurant too. You can sit inside or outside on the wooden terrace but if you want the Pirate dish you have to sit inside. The cost of the Pirate Borneo was 15 Euro per person which I think is good value for money. You can sit and enjoy the view as you eat and drink on a typical warm evening in Fuerteventura.

Fuerteventura – The best time to go.

Fuerteventura is one of our favourite Canary island holiday destinations here at Global Holidays. The warm dry climate makes it an ideal holiday destination all year round. Fuerteventura is a great destination for school half term holidays in October, March and May as the weather in other Mediterranean destinations can be a bit unpredictable. The coolest months on Fuerteventura are January and February but it’s still much milder than here in the UK.

Having just come back from another Fuerteventura holiday and after having such a chilled out time I was searching on the internet and I found a really good short video about Feurteventura so I thought that I would put it on our travel blog.If you haven’t been to Fuerteventura you should consider going, especially if you love good beaches, great restaurants and some laid back nightlife. In my opinion the beaches are up there amongst the best beaches that you will find anywhere and they are not busy at all. If you like your nightlife to be busy and brash then the island is not for you but if you like sitting in a bar in the evening drinking a cool beer and watching a live band then it could be for you.

The weather is hot in summer but not over bearing as the island is cooled by Atlantic winds, which is why Fuerteventura is good for wind surfing. The temperature in the evening when I visited in early October was a lovely 22c making it perfect for sitting outside either having a meal or just watching the world go by in one of the many bars and restaurants.A week self catering in November costs from only £300 per person including flights and accommodation which is not a lot to escape the cold wet and windy we normally have in the UK in November. Families, couples and singles will all love Fuerteventura so what are you waiting for?….Give us a call today!

Accommodation rental – the downside of booking yourself.

I have just returned from a really good holiday in Fuerteventura. As a travel agent I know the benefits of booking through a good travel agency. You get financial protection, professional advice, good quality products and low prices. I have been preaching these benefits for a while as well as telling customers that there are risks in booking your own separate flights and accommodation on the internet because if a single part of the holiday is changed or cancelled or the airline goes bust or the accommodation owner sells you a dodgy villa or apartment then because you probably won’t have ATOL protection you could find yourself with a financial loss.However, when my wife found a nice looking house on the internet I agreed that she could book it despite the fact that I had reservations about it.

The house we booked was in a great location and I can’t fault that. The photograghs on the website were accurate. However, after we arrived and had admired the view we discovered that we had no cold water. A phone call to the owner solved the problem as he came out to sort the problem for us. The next day we woke up and decided to go into the local town, Corralejo. There was a problem, however as we couldn’t open the gate as the locked was jammed !

This gate had a high wall on each side so there was no alternative but for me to climb over the wall and try to unlock the gate from the other side. After jumping from a great height I managed to unlock the gate. It was only a minor problem but nevertheless I don’t want hassle when I’m on holiday.

A couple of days later my wife decided to use the washing machine but she couldn’t get it working. It turned out the power to the washing machine was off because of a fault. By this time as well my back was aching because the mattress on the bed was old and very uncomfortable. Half way through the holiday we decided to stay in and use the kitchen to cook a meal and have a bottle of wine whilst watching a DVD. The house owners website advertised the fact that the house had a DVD player. The good news is – the house did have a DVD player, but the bad news is, it didn’t work ! Oh well, no a major problem as I still had my bottle of wine and the lovely view from the terrace outside !

The saga of problems however didn’t end there. The house next door, and with the same owner as ours, had a burst pipe which brought the ceilings down. Some unlucky holidaymakers were due to arrive at the house in a few days so they were going to be in for a nasty shock. Luckily our house wasn’t affected though ….. or so we thought because from that time on we had problems with our hot water. Most mornings and evenings we didn’t have any hot water for having a shower although it did come back on sometimes. We mentioned it to the house owner but he never got round to sorting it out. Two days before the end of our two week holiday the lights in the kitchen went out and there were no replacement bulbs.

The point of this story is that if things go wrong and you haven’t booked through a tour operator then you could find yourself in a situation where you can’t get problems resolved. A tour operator would have resolved this situation and possiby paid compensation.
