Larnaca, Cyprus – Not Just an Airport !

Larnaca in Cyprus opened its new airport in November 2009 and the capacity of the airport is now four times bigger than it was before. The new airport at Larnaca can now handle 7.5 million passengers, a massive increase of over 4 million people. If the airlines start to use the new capacity at Larnaca then you can expect far more cheap seats to be available to this holiday island.

With a flying time from the UK of 4.5 hours Cyprus has long been a holiday favourite because of its warm year round climate and upmarket hotels. During January and February you can expect day time temperatures of about 18C which is very pleasant for exploring what Cyprus has to offer. In the summer you can expect hot and sunny days.

Flying into Larnaca is convenient for the popular holiday resorts of Protarus and Limassol as well as the lively summer destination of Ayia Napa, however Larnaca itself has plenty to offer the visitor and it is well worth staying longer. Larnaca has been a weekend break destination of locals for quite some time due to its 80 plus hotels and apartments, and its mix of old and new in the town centre.

The main tourist areas outside Larnaca town centre are Mackenzie Beach and Dhekelia Road. Larnaca also has a mile long palm tree lined sea front promenade. There are also museums, galleries and pretty squares where there are plenty of pavement cafes and restaurants. Larnaca also has its modern side like its designer shops, internet cafes. You can take a cruise around the bay or go on one of the officially organised walking tours. This is a good way to explore the rich history of Larnaca as the city is built on the remains of the ancient city of Kition and there is an impressive 17th century fort and archaeological sites.

Larnaca makes a good base from which to explore the rest of Cyprus. The resorts of Protaruas and Ayia Napa are only a half-hour drive away, as is Nocosia, while it takes 40 minutes to drive to Limassol or the amazing Trudos Mountains. Paphos takes about an hour and a half to drive to from Larnaca and the road is mostly dual carriageway.
